In the spring semester, we regularly have a “Physics: Fluid Dynamics” class. In spring 2025, we held that class as the Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) class collaborating with the class of “Capita Selecta: Fluid Dynamics and Heat Transfer” at Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember, Indonesia. Alongside with fundamental theory of fluid dynamics and heat transfer in our weekly classes, the students also experiment to measure the viscosity of several liquids using an Ostwald viscometer. We set up our own experimental tools, and students work as a team. The on-site and online classmates worked together to follow a step-by-step procedure to measure the viscosity of an oil by counting how fast the fluid flows inside a controlled tube. Some results are very accurate within the measurement sensitivity, and we had a lot of fun! Next year, we expect the participants from other Indonesian universities to join our COIL class.
