Shibaura Institute of Technology (Koto-ku, Tokyo; President: Jun Yamada) is pleased to announce that the percentage of female undergraduate students enrolled in April 2024 was 26.6% (496 female students out of 1866 total enrolled). This is more than 5 percentage points higher than the 21.2% of students admitted in 2023, and is the highest ratio of female students ever recorded at the university (as of May 1, 2024).
The percentage of female students throughout the undergraduate student body has also increased, from 19.8% to 21.8% in FY2023 (1702 female students out of 7794 total undergraduate students), exceeding 20% for the first time for the university as a whole.

The national average percentage of female students entering the field of engineering is 15.2% (according to the 2021 Basic School Survey by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology), indicating that there is still a large gender gap in this field. In this context, Shibaura Institute of Technology has been making the following efforts to increase the number of female students studying science and engineering and to produce a large number of significant human resources for society, based on the belief that diversity is important for creating innovation in both education and research.

Initiatives to Increase the Percentage of Female Students at Shibaura Institute of Technology

  • Open admission for women (women) recommendation program was implemented starting in FY 2018, now as a special admission program for women in science and engineering, and 75 students were admitted through this program in FY 2024.
  • Scholarships (equivalent to the entrance fee) will be offered to more than 100 female applicants with outstanding results in the entrance examination starting in FY2022.
  • One-week laboratory experience internship in collaboration with a girls' high school since FY2022.
  • From FY2022, we will hold a "Mini-Open Campus for Girls" for female high school students and their parents to give them a taste of the "now" of technical universities.

Shibaura Institute of Technology aims to be an "Advanced School for Diversity Promotion" and will celebrate its 100th anniversary by 2027.Percentage of female students 30%We will continue our efforts to help create innovation in society by nurturing and producing many female students studying science and engineering, with the goal of achieving the above.
